New Book Tuesdays: Week 18

Welcome to a new year! I love New Years. I feel like I'm getting a fresh start. I also really love sharing a lot of great books with students about Winter, snow, snowmen (and snow-women), hibernation, and animals that live in cold climates. Therefore, here are some new books this week.

New Picture Book

Blizzard by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco. This book is a Junior Library Guild Selection. Several students have requested this book. It was one of the reading selections from this year's Real Men Read event. I added the book Blackout by the same author last year.

"One winter day it started to snow,

and it did

not

stop.

At first it was fun,

But four days later, the snowplows still hadn’t come,

cabin fever was setting in,

and rations were running low.

Someone had to take action.

Will one intrepid boy be able to triumph over a fearsome BLIZZARD?"

New Chapter Book

Zombie Winter by Jason Strange. Ok, I'll admit it. This book is a little creepy and strange, but hey, it's hard to get boys excited about reading. Boys like zombies. There you go. What's important is that they are reading, right? Plus, it's written on a 2nd-3rd grade reading level.

"Which is worse, a long, cold winter, or a town of zombies?

A cold morning in Ravens Pass. No one speaks. Feet crunch through snow. A quiet school. Hoods pulled over heads. Students shuffle. A clock ticks. In the kitchen, something's brewing... Kane can survive a long winter. But can he survive zombies?"

New Nonfiction Books

The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter's Wonder by Mark Cassino with Jon Nelson, Ph.D. This book is a Junior Library Guild Selection.

"How do snow crystals form? Are no two snow crystals alike? What's the best way to catch a snowflake? These questions and more are answered in this visually stunning exploration of the science of snow. With a blizzard of accolades to its name, including starred reviews in Booklist and The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, The Story of Snow continues to charm reviewers and educators: the National Science Teachers Association and Children's Book Council named it an Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12 and the New York Public Library featured it in their List of 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing. Perfect for areas where snow falls, but will enhance learning about weather anywhere."

Winter Bees & Other Poems of the Cold by Joyce Sidman and Rick Allen. This book is a Junior Library Guild Selection.

"Dusk fell

and the cold came creeping,

came prickling into our hearts . . .

How do animals brave the longest and coldest season of the north? See the tundra swans settle into sleep. Hear the fee-bee of the chickadee singing from its perch in the evergreen. Watch beavers dive deep beneath the frozen pond, and moose wade through sparkling snow. Discover winter’s safe places for these hardy creatures—how they snuggle warmly and survive until spring’s warmth returns."
