New Book Tuesdays: Week 5

We're halfway through September yall! Here's what's new in the Media Center this week!

New Picture Book

Penny and her Marble by Kevin Henkes. Books by Kevin Henkes are always loved by our students and teachers alike. This one is an I Can Read Beginning Reading Level 1 with simple sentences for new readers. It is a 2014 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award winner.

"Penny found a marble as blue and perfect as the sky. The marble is smooth, and the marble is fast, but the marble does not belong to her. It belongs to her neighbor, Mrs. Goodwin. Now Penny is worried she’s taken something important, but a chance encounter with Mrs. Goodwin puts all her fears to rest." -Image and blurb from kevinhenkes.com

New Chapter Book

Duke by Kirby Larson - Newberry Honor-winning author. This was a Book Fair book last year, and it was in high demand with shoppers - especially the boys.

"With the world at war, can a boy be as brave as his dog?

A poignant World War II story about a boy and his dog and his day, and the many meanings of bravery.

With World War II raging and his father fighting overseas in Europe, eleven-year-old Hobie Hanson is determined to do his part to help his family and his country, even if it means giving up his beloved German shepherd, Duke. Hoping to help end the war and bring his dad home faster, Hobie decides to donate Duke to Dogs for Defense, an organization that urges Americans to “loan” their pets to the military to act as sentries, mine sniffers, and patrol dogs. Hobie immediately regrets his decision and tries everything he can to get Duke back, even jeopardizing his friendship with the new boy at school. But when his father is taken prisoner by the Germans, Hobie realizes he must let Duke go and reach deep within himself to be brave. Will Hobie ever see Duke, or his father, again?" -Image and blurb from kirbylarson.com/duke

New Nonfiction Book

Firefighters A to Z by Chris L. Demarest. This is a great ABC book for younger students, and I'm sure it will be popular with Fire Prevention Week coming up soon.

"A is for Alarm that rings loud and clear. B is for Boots stowed in our bunker gear.

From A to Z, volunteer firefighter and fine artist Chris Demarest presents a day-in-the-life of firefighters whose job it is to answer the call to put out fires and save property and lives. In a simple, informative text and with glowing realistic illustrations that thoroughly envelop the reader, the danger of fire and the courageous job firefighters do every day are brought to life for readers everywhere." -Image and blurb from GoodReads.com
