New Book Tuesdays: Week 10

Pumpkins and Apples Everywhere!

This week's books are all about pumpkins and apples! Some of our students have had the opportunity to visit the pumpkin patch this month! It's always so much fun to see so many pumpkins in one place and get to pick just the right one. Another thing I love about Fall is driving up to the mountains to get apples from the apple orchard. My favorite is off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's called The Orchard at Altapass.

In honor of this oh-so-lovely time of year, here are some new books just in this week.

New Picture Books

Annie the Apple Pie Fairy by Tim Bugbird. This was actually another Book Fair book! I know you thought I added all of those in the last three weeks! Oops!! I guess I bought more than I realized! There are several other fairy books by this author. Pippa the Pumpkin Fairy was at our Fall Book Fair last year, and I bought it too.

"Annie the Apple Pie Fairy is a TV chef who makes simple, homey pies. One day, her position as the queen of pies is threatened by Sondra the Strudel fairy’s new show. An intense competition starts between Annie and Sondra, and sees their fairy audience become obsessed with Sondra’s fancy pies and the gadgets used to make them. But when the mass of new gadgets and pie-making machines causes a huge power outage, what will happen to all the pies, and will Annie be able to save the day?" -Image and blurb from MakeBelieveIdeas.com

Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins by James Dean. Pete the Cat is a favorite character at JES. This book has a video and music to go along with it. See below.

"Pete the Cat takes on the classic favorite children's song "Five Little Pumpkins" in New York Times bestselling author James Dean's Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins. Join Pete as he rocks out to this cool adaptation of the classic Halloween song!" -Image and blurb from HarperCollins.com

New Chapter Books

Clara Lee and the Apple Pie Dream by Jenny Han. I found this book as a recommendation for readers who liked the Clementine series by Sarah Pennypacker (also available in the library here at JES). This is an early chapter book written on around a 3rd grade reading level.

"Clara Lee likes her best friends, her grandpa, kimchi, candy necklaces (her signature look!), and the idea of winning the Little Miss Apple Pie contest. Clara Lee doesn't like her mom's fish soup, bad dreams (but Grandpa says they mean good luck!), speaking in public, or when her little sister is being annoying.

One day, after a bad dream, Clara Lee is thrilled to have a whole day of luck (Like!). But then, bad luck starts to follow (Dislike!). When will Clara Lee's luck change again? Will it change in time for the Little Miss Apple Pie contest?" -Image and blurb from DearJennyHan.com

Invisible Inkling: Dangerous Pumpkins by Emily Jenkins. This is a Junior Library Guild selection. It's part of the Invisible Inkling series, and is on a 3rd-4th grade reading level.

"Hank’s invisible bandapat loves squash. How can Hank keep him from eating every pumpkin in sight, especially the ones his sister carved for a Halloween competition? Black-and-white illustrations." -Image and blurb from JuniorLibraryGuild.com

Check out the author, Emily Jenkins, interviewing Invisible Inkling.

New Nonfiction Books

Apples, Apples Everywhere: Learning About Apple Harvests by Robin Koontz. This is part of an Autumn nonfiction series. The next book below is also from the same series. Last year we added Leaves Fall Down: Learning About Autumn Leaves to the library. The reading level for these books is 1st-2nd grade. Both of these books feature speech bubbles. This one includes directions for making a dried apple wreath.

"Autumn is apple harvest time. Come along on a trip to the apple orchard. Find out how apples are picked and stored. Learn which apples are best for munching. But watch out for the apple worms!" -Image and blurb from GoodReads.com

Pick the Perfect Pumpkin: Learning About Pumpkin Harvests by Robin Koontz. This book is from the same Autumn series as the one above. It's on a 1st-2nd grade reading level. This one has directions on how to make a "pumpkin critter".

"Autumn is pumpkin harvest time. Come along on a trip to a pumpkin farm. Learn where pumpkins come from and how to store them. But watch out for the scary jack-o'-lanterns!" -Image and blurb from GoodReads.com

Check out this video from the Old Farmers Almanac on how to pick the perfect pumpkin!
