We're taking a break from all of the holiday books this week to focus on some highly requested books. These are books which the kids have asked for specifically quite a few times. They asked, and I listened! Here are the new additions. They won't stick around the library for long!
New Picture Books
The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt. This book is a #1 New York Times Bestseller. Our students have LOVED The Day the Crayons Quit by the same author so much - ever since our Literacy Coach read it aloud to them during a power outage at school. The books hasn't been checked in a full day since then. They are going to love this new book just as much. They will really enjoy the glow in the dark drawing!
"Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun.
What can Duncan possibly do to appease all of the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best?
Kids will be imagining their own humorous conversations with crayons and coloring a blue streak after sharing laughs with Drew Daywalt and New York Times bestselling author & illustrator Oliver Jeffers. This story is perfect as a back-to-school gift, for all budding artists, for fans of humorous books such as Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Sciezka and Lane Smith, and for fans of Oliver Jeffers' Stuck, The Incredible Book Eating Boy, Lost and Found, and This Moose Belongs to Me." -Images and blurb from CrayonsPictureBooks.com
Memoirs of a Hamster by Devin Scillian. This was another recommendation from our incredible Literacy Coach. For our students who enjoyed Memoirs of a Goldfish, this new book in sure to be a great read.
"Night 1 / My life is perfect. / I have a bowl full of seeds, a cozy pile of wood shavings, and room to run. / I'm never leaving here. / Question: Who's the luckiest hamster in the world? / Answer: ME! Seymour the hamster has the perfect life. He has a spacious cage, a constant food supply, and a FuzzyBoy 360 exercise wheel that lets him run to his heart's content. Life could not be better. Or could it? When Pearl the cat tells Seymour of the goodies beyond the safe confines of his cage, he starts to think he's missing out. And out is the new in! It's only after Seymour is out of his cage that he begins to fully appreciate his safe and cozy home." -Image and blurb from GoodReads.com

New Nonfiction Books
Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla by Katherine Applegate. We've had the book, The One and Only Ivan, in the library for a while now, and it has been a popular choice with students. Now, we also have this New York Times Bestselling nonfiction book by the same author which tells the story of Ivan in a different way.

Check out the book trailer below...
"In spare, powerful words and evocative illustrations, Newbery medalist Katherine Applegate and artist G. Brian Karas present the extraordinary real story of a special gorilla.
Captured as a baby, Ivan was brought to a mall in Tacoma, Washington, to attract shoppers. Gradually, public pressure built until a better way of life for Ivan was found at Zoo Atlanta. From the Congo to America, and from a local business attraction to a national symbol of animal welfare, Ivan the Shopping Mall Gorilla traveled an astonishing distance in miles and in impact.
This is his true story. Photographs of Ivan are included in the back matter." -Image and blurb from hmhbooks.com/ivan
